Stub's Run

A native to Dexter, Glenn - more commonly known as "Stub" - spent the majority of his life in the area. Living large, he loved riding his Harley-Davidson Motorcycles and giving back to his community by way of his involvement in the American Legion, Masonic Lodge, developing the Black River Campground, as Village Trustee, and the Dexter Fire Department and Ambulance Squad.

To ensure that the memory of Stub lives on, those that knew him best have organized a Charity Motorcycle Run that will take place annually. Each year the Run will choose a local charity to continue to do what Stub loved best: helping those that are in the community.

For this year's Run, The Last Station was chosen to receive all the monies raised. This project started when leaders in the Dexter area wanted to remember and honor the history of volunteer firefighters. In 2012 the villages of Brownville and Dexter combined to form the Village of Brownville Joint Fire District. That allowed the Dexter Volunteer Fire Department to become a non-profit, and in 2021 they launched the Last Station campaign.

“The Last Station will be a permanent tribute to our past as we move forward as volunteer firefighters and EMS providers,” stated Dexter Volunteer Fire Department Inc. Member Gerry Kostyk.

The plans are to construct a wood frame, accessory building next to the current Dexter Historical Society building. This new building will aim to highlight the history of volunteer firefighters in the rural community, and store “precious cargo” such as an 1929 Brockway Fire Engine and a 1865 Ramsey Hand Pump.

“Volunteer fire departments have historically been the center of the community for years and years with parades and field days and activities like that,” shared Kostyk. “They’ve always been the center of a community and, you know, today I’m afraid that people tend to forget that.”

To date, The Last Station campaign has raised $12,719 towards their goal of $100,000. Those that knew Stub best are honored to organize this charity ride in his memory to get The Last Station closer to their fundraising goal.
